A SECOND million dollar contract to complete work on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail has been awarded to a Somerset based business.
Contractors, A&M Civil Contracting, were this month awarded the contract by Somerset Regional Council to complete work on the trail between Harlin and Moore.
Earlier this year, Council, was successful in their application to the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) program to complete the historic Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.
The $1.45 million BBRF grant aims to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities in the future.
In November, Council awarded the first of two contracts to complete works on the rail trail between Toogoolawah to Harlin to A&M Civil Contracting.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the rail trail, once complete, would be Australia’s longest rail trail at 160km with 80% located within Somerset Regional Council’s boundary.
“The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail will be a huge economic driver for Somerset and it is great that we are able to support our local economy from the onset with the awarding of this construction contract to a Somerset based business,” Cr Lehmann said.
“A&M Civil have past experience, knowledge, and resources to fulfil this contract and have previously worked on other sections of the rail trail for the state government.”
The funding pledged to Council from the Australian Government is to complete upgrades to the rail trail from Toogoolawah to Moore.
Council will use some of its own funds as well as $1.8 million from the state government to complete the rail trail upgrades by June 2018.
