Fernvale – gateway to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

The new billboard for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail on the Telstra telephone exchange in Fernvale, Somerset, Qld was a joint initiative by the Fernvale Community Association and the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Users Association.

Initially, the Fernvale Community Association approached Telstra with a request to tidy up the exchange as it was a bit of an eyesore. Telstra came to the party with the idea of a mural on the exchange. This quickly evolved into a proposal for a billboard to promote the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail which runs just 50 metres behind the exchange.

The announcement by the Queensland Government of $1.8 million funding to complete the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in December following a very effective community campaign was the deal clincher for Telstra.

Fernvale is a gateway town for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail which passes just 50 metres behind the exchange, so the telephone exchange is in an excellent position to act as a billboard for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

The great graphic design is by the very talented Keith Bremner of Jakazni (sponsored by Zanows and Fernvale Produce Mire 10) and the artwork was hand painted by the wonderful Vicki Pattison of Crazy Painter.

Our thanks to May Boisen, Area Manager of Telstra Countrywide SE Qld and Nick Potter of Telstra for helping to make this happen. On one occasion Nick even cycled over Mt Glorious on his day off to meet with us, which is no mean feat.

As a keen cyclist himself, Nick totally understood the economic potential of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail to help build the local rural economy.

Paul Heymans, committee member of the Fernvale Community Association and President of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Users Association said, “It’s a great outcome which brightens up what used to be an eyesore in the middle of Fernvale and which also puts the town on the map as an important gateway to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail”.
